Alberto Bullani, Country Manager VMware Italia

After last VMworld held in San Francisco, CA, on 31 August, VMware Italia has presented all the new features to the press of our country. Alberto Bullani, Country Manager, by introducing the main concepts of software defined datacenters, a topic that VMware has been harping on for years, seized the opportunity to talk about a new report concerning the employees' “digital skills”.

No upsetting truth has been revealed by the report: 75% of the interviewed, as far as Italy is concerned, considers that the knowledge of digital technologies (“digital skills”) can improve the organizational competitive advantage, but it ain’t the youngers (25-34 years) that can lead the change: according to 45% of the interviewed people, it’s the 33-45 years age group to be considered as the leading one. The main obstacles to the realization of the digital skills are personal goals not aligned to technologies, the lack of budget and the habits rooted in the company.

When analyzing more deeply the news of the american VMworld, Bullani and Zerminiani (Senior Presales VMware Italia) have focused on the motto “One cloud, any app, any device” and on VMware’s wide-ranging approach to private, managed and public cloud. In this sense vCoud Air, the company public cloud offering, clearly satisfies the needs of those who want more than what their private cloud can offer, with solutions directly provided by VMware and some partners (vCloud Air Network).

With the aim of getting acquired with the concept of native Apps for the cloud, Zerminiani has discussed about vSphere Integrated Containers which allows containers to run inside a dedicated Linux appliance created by VMware and base on the innovative Operative System Photon OS. At the moment this technology is available as private beta, the public release is set to 2016.
Among the main news there are Virtual SAN 6.1, now at the third generation, which offers even more advanced features like stretched clusters support and a two-host architecture, and EVO SDDC, an evolution of the previous EVO Rail, an hyperconvergent package that, with the partnership of some vendors, includes hardware, storage, networking, software and management system in a single bundle.
EVO SDDC (Software Defined DataCenter) will be available in 2016 too in a first version that will be a collaboration between Dell, Quanta and VCE for the hardware part development, while the software engineering part is obviously carried out by VMware.
